History of the Bluenose Bonspiel
The first Bluenose Bonspiel took place over Labour Day weekend in 2010 at the Mayflower Curling Club. Despite unseasonably warm temperatures and the arrival of Hurricane Earl, 24 teams gathered in Halifax for the inaugural event. The weekend endured power outages, altered social plans, and a condensed draw schedule, but the bonspiel went ahead and became a memorable success. As an unexpected footnote to the weekend, Justin Trudeau stopped by the club during the event.
Since then, the Bluenose Bonspiel has grown alongside the curling community it serves. Following the opening of the new Mayflower Curling Club, the event expanded from 24 teams to 48 teams, making it one of the largest 2SLGBTQI+ curling bonspiels in Canada. Over the years, the event has welcomed curlers from across North America and has been honoured to host world-class athletes, including Nova Scotia champions Christina Black, Luke Saunders, and Marie Christianson.
The Loose Ends Curling League has also hosted the Canadian Pride Curling Championships twice, bringing the national championship to Halifax in 2013 and again in 2023.
